Bert Abbas
Production Operations Manager, Dana Petroleum Netherlands B.V

I’m a qualified marine engineer and started my career with an international towing and salvage company, before moving into the oil and gas industry. That was 28 years ago and during this time I’ve worked for Conoco Phillips, Clyde Petroleum and latterly for Veba Oil & Gas which subsequently became Dana Petroleum Netherlands.

I joined Dana in 1999 as an Offshore Installation Manager (OIM). Together with my back to back OIM, I was part of the project team that managed the engineering and construction phase of the Dana-operated Hanze platform, which resulted in us working in France, India and Korea. I also took on the role of Head of Concurrent Operations during the hook up and commissioning phase.

In 2007 I moved to a temporary assignment as Onshore OIM and a year later became Production Superintendent. It was from there that I moved into my current role as Production Operations Manager for our Dutch operated assets, with responsibility for managing day to day operations to ensure our installations maintain their high uptime. My hands-on experience from working offshore has proved to be invaluable. I’m now based onshore but being able to consider things from an offshore perspective helps me to set clear, realistic, and achievable goals for myself and the rest of the team.

Why Dana?

Initially, I was attracted to working for Dana as I was looking for a new challenge. At that time we were setting up production operations in the Netherlands and were also developing the Hanze field which meant bringing a new team of talented people together to operate the Hanze platform. Building a strong team and developing our own identity and culture was a big challenge and one I was ready for.

One thing I can honestly say is there’s never a dull moment at Dana! We’ve gone through a number of changes over the last few years, most recently in 2010 when the Korean National Oil Corporation acquired Dana. Of course there have been some uncertain periods during this transitional phase but it’s good to see that Dana now has a clear vision and ambition to expand to become a leading international oil and gas company.

As Dana grows there will be lots of opportunities to work with new people, for us to learn from each other and share new ideas. I’m really excited about the future and about the personal contribution I can make to Dana’s success.
