We’re committed to excellence across every part of our business – and health, safety, security and environment is no exception.

At Dana, Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) about continuing to build on our solid foundations and strong track record in HSSE.  It’s about creating a consistent approach to HSSE across all our businesses. It’s about continuing to challenge, review, develop and improve our systems. It’s about understanding and managing risks. It’s about operating safely and responsibly, wherever we are in the world.

Above all, it’s doing everything we can to make sure our people are safe and we minimise the impact of our operations on the environments we work in.

In 2011 we established an HSSE team. They provide support across our business, ensuring a consistent and common approach to all aspects of health, safety, security and environment.  Our main focus for this year is putting the foundations of a Group HSSE management system in place. We’re currently building an HSSE framework based on industry best practice to enable us to meet our aim of becoming a leading HSSE performer.

Each of our managers is developing their respective system frameworks which will support all HSSE activity in Dana. Ultimately this will deliver common and consistent HSSE process across the company.

But HSSE isn’t just their responsibility – everyone at Dana is responsible for demonstrating the right behaviours, and meeting the standards and requirements we’ve set.

Synergi™ information management system

Our HSSE performance is monitored at group and country level. Key performance indicators, goals and objectives are set on an annual basis to ensure compliance and continual improvement.

One of the tools we’ve recently started to use to collect, share and communicate data across our global operations is called Synergi™.  It’s a performance and incident reporting system that allows us to capture, distribute and report local and global performance by standardising our entire HSSE incident reporting and assurance management process.

Synergi™ will allow us to collect information about our performance in one central database, giving us a clear picture of our activity across the company and allowing us to identify and react to trends.

This means we can make decisions based on real time factual reporting, which supports our commitment to continual improvement by learning from our mistakes and doing all we can to make sure they don’t happen again.

Safety culture measurement

As you’d expect, one of Dana’s core values is safety. We recognise the importance of a strong safety culture and we’re measuring our progress using a well-established safety culture maturity model.

Crisis management

We take our duty of care to our people very seriously. We’ve developed a thorough crisis management framework and have dedicated resources to provide the procedures, information and training required.

Process safety & asset integrity

Prevention is always better than cure, particularly when it comes to process safety and asset integrity. When we get this right we protect our people, the environment, our business and our reputation. Having carried out a preliminary assessment of our process safety in 2011 we’re now undertaking more detailed independent reviews. The results will determine how we manage risks and prioritise our continued efforts.

Environmental performance

To take our environmental performance to a new level we need to understand where we are today. We’re undertaking a programme of environmental assessment and looking to see how our performance compares to our industry and business peers. Then we’ll know what we need to do to take our performance to a new level.
