Dana Petroleum has today announced its sponsorship of Paralympic medal hopeful Karen Darke. Karen, already a hand-cycling world championship bronze medallist and accomplished adventurer, will compete in two hand-cycling events at the London 2012 Paralympic Games in September.
Karen was paralysed from the chest down after a rock climbing accident aged 21. Since then, she has continuously challenged physical and mental barriers to complete many incredible feats around the world. She has hand-biked across the Himalayas and the 2,000km length of Japan. Not content to restrict herself to dry land, Karen has kayaked the Alaskan ‘Inside Passage’ and sit-skied 600km across Greenland to become the first paraplegic to complete this journey. Karen’s next challenge, ‘The Pole of Possibility’, begins in 2013 when she will sit-ski 1,000km by armpower in a bid to reach the Geographic South Pole from the edge of the frozen Antarctic.
Karen took up competitive hand-cycling after watching the Beijing Paralympic Games in 2008. After just two years of racing she qualified to compete at the London 2012 Paralympics as a member of the Great Britain para-cycling team. Six weeks after competing at the London Games, Karen will once again represent Great Britain at the World Paratriathlon Championships in New Zealand.
Marcus Richard’s, Dana’s Chief Executive said: “Karen is a remarkable woman and a phenomenal athlete, whose indestructible drive and commitment to performance mirrors Dana’s ambition to become a leading international oil and gas company. As a former oil and gas geologist Karen is well known in the industry and we’re proud, as a first time sponsor, to be sharing this journey with her and look forward to offering her all the support we can in the upcoming Games.”
“We’ll continue to support Karen in 2013 as a team member of Pole of Possibility, where she’ll embark on a challenge to become the first paraplegic to sit-ski 1000km from the edge of the Antarctic to the geographical South Pole to raise £1 million for charity.”
Karen commented: “I am extremely happy to have this partnership with Dana Petroleum in place for 2012 and beyond. I look forward to working together to achieve our respective goals!”
